Though I shared this video on the forum a couple of weeks ago, I thought it appropriate to add it to the main site. With the Fourth of July just two days away, it's important to remember how this holiday means more than barbeques and fireworks. It was the day that the colonies with a united voice, proclaimed,
"We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."
*** Full Disclosure: My fifteen year-old son and I made this video. It was a project I wanted to collaborate on, not only to bond with my teenage son, but to share some knowledge that pertained to our nation. In a society growing morally bankrupt with each passing year, it's not only vital to instill virtue, but to also teach our Republic's history to the younger generation - the good portions and the bad. It's a disservice to shelter our children from the darker moments of our history. How else do we learn from our mistakes?
So...if you are able, have your children watch this quick 3.5 minute video. The subject matter is intentionally basic, allowing Mothers and Fathers to expand on the information as you communicate with your children. The material covers the forms of taxation and tyranny imposed on the colonies that led to the written document.
